Space – the perfect environment for culturing stem cells

Stem Cells article march 2017Transporting stem cell cultivation to the earth’s orbit could play a key role in the faster rate of growth of stem cells for clinical use, according to a recent article in the International Business Times

Preliminary research has shown that the microgravity environment of the International Space Station actively increases the growth rate of stem cell, and researchers have now confirmed that human stem cell are being cultivated on the ISS for trials back on earth.

The trial are specifically researching  mesenchymal stem cells (found in the bone marrow), hematopoietic stem cells (which can grow into all other blood cells) and leukemia cancer stem cells (responsible for leukemia, or cancer of blood-forming tissues).

Abba Zubair, a researcher at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida who is directly involved in the research said “What is unique about this investigation is that we are not only looking at the biology of the cells and how they grow, but focusing on application, how we can use them to treat patients”.

In a statement, NASA said that the long term goals of the research were to develop a safe and reliable clinical grade stem cell bioreactor in space for commercial use and to understand the biology of stem cells and the progression of cancer stem cells.

Scott Wolf, Director of Research for Grace century commented ”It’s only a matter of time before stem cells are regularly cultivated in this manner, given their massive potential for effective clinical treatment of many diseases”

Miami Researchers use Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Potential Treatment for Alzheimer’s Disease

A recent article from Fox 26 Houston has reported on how mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) will be central to research being conducted at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, to help treat . It is hoped that 30 patients will be recruited for he study which will observe various indicators in patients, with the objective of the team to explore how the disease could potentially be slowed or even reverse the condition.

Dr. Bernard Baumel from Miller School of Medicine who is part of the research team, said “MSCs are anti-inflammatory and they promote indigenous stem cells in your body to proliferate. They stimulate cell growth and have a lot of attributes that are very advantageous for using them in humans.”

Canadian Research Team Make Breakthrough in Stem Cell Treatment of Osteoporosis

Stem Cells Pipette

In Canada, researchers from the University of Toronto have collaborated with Ottawa Hospital have linked stem cells to a possible breakthrough in the treatment of age-related osteoporosis, which is also known as brittle bone disease.

The condition affects many millions of people worldwide, with women being particularly affected. Whilst certain lifestyle interventions have been shown to promote positive bone health, an effective treatment for age-related osteoporosis has not yet been identified.

However, the Canadian research team, hypothesising that deficiencies in mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) have a causal influence on the onset of age-related osteoporosis, injected MSC into mice with damaged bone, which resulted in healthy bone being reformed over a period of 6 months, significantly more than the general increase in bone health the researchers had hoped for.
