A new experimental clinical stem cell treatment done at the Broad Stem Cell Research Center?at UCLA may be the cure for patients?whose immune systems have been failing them since birth. The condition known as?Severe combined immunodeficiency?affects cells that play vital roles in helping the immune system battle bacteria, viruses and fungi that can cause infections, even the common cold can be deadly.

As reported by CBSnews.com, based on a clinical trial, the new treatment involves taking bone marrow from the patient to gather stem cells. A cloned gene is then added to correct what was missing at birth and out of the 23 test subjects, every single patient’s immune system has started working again.
